In Hayes County, Texas is a single grave on the Wenger Ranch. The story told by local residents is that the grave is that of an eight year old girl of the Stockman Family. She died while her family lived for a short time at that location while passing through the area. The location of the grave later became the Adare Ranch. Tradition has it that the grave was there when Mr. Bill Adare bought the land shortly after the Civil War. When Mr. and Mrs. P. Cedric Wenger bought the ranch, Mrs. Wenger had an ornamental wrought iron fence made for the single grave to protect it. She placed a cherub statue at the head of the grave. Flowers decorate the grave on certain occasions.

The grave is located approximately one-half mile above the Adare Cemetery, on the Wenger Ranch just out of Wimberley, Texas.

To reach the Wenger ranch, take River Road for 4.2 miles from the Wimberley Square, veer to the right at Wayside Drive, continue up the hill, and follow Wayside Drive until you reach the ranch. Turn left at the ranch entrance and continue up the lane. The grave is located on the left side of the road just a short distance before you reach the Adare Cemetery. The Adare Cemetery is 0.9 mile from the entrance gate.

Who is this little Stockman girl buried in Hays County? We have know for many years that Hardy Francis Stockman and Mary Naomi Williams had two daughters. Laura Stockman has been accounted for and her grave has been found. The other daughter, Dorcas Stockman, named for her paternal grandmother is known from family Bible records to have died as a young girl.

Prior to 1850 Hardy and Naomi moved their growing family from Rusk County, TX to Caldwell County where they owned land located on Plum Creek on the south side of the road that crossed the Old Iron Bridge east of Lockhart, TX. They were still living there when grandmother Dorcas died in 1852 but sold their land 24 Jan 1853. They were in Gillespie County, the part of it that became Blanco County by 13 Feb 1854 according to land claim records. Dorcas died during this period of about one year. If Dorcas was eight years old at the time of her death then she was born circa 1845.

Family records tell us that the eldest child, Young Hardy Stockman was born 4 July 1844 and that the son, William Henry Stockman was born March 1846. Is it possible that Dorcas was the second child in the family. Unfortunately, Hardy F and Naomi were not enumerated in the 1850 census of Texas so we have no census record in which Dorcas was recorded.

Shortly before the 2003 reunion in Groesbeck, TX, Clarence Welborn and Dixie Mandaville made a day trip to Wimberley, TX and visited the grave. Dixie is a descendant of Dorcas’ uncle Henry Joseph Stockman who lived with his family next to Hardy and Naomi and their family on Plum Creek near Lockhart, TX. So far as is known, they are the first family to visit the grave since Hardy Francis and Mary Naomi moved their family on to what became Blanco County, TX.-//-

The Reunion this year in Apple Valley, CA was a very pleasant success. John and Sharon Stockman and all their helpers put together an excellent reunion. The consensus of those who attended was that a reunion in Silver City in 2006 would be an excellent idea.

In the December 2004 issue of The Stockman Family Newsletter recently uncovered information on the family of John Stockman, Son of Henry Joseph Stockman and Elizabeth Jordan Greenwood was reported. Some additional information on other members of this family has come to light.

As reported in The December Newsletter, John Stockman and Sally Harrington had a son John D Stockman who married Hattie LNU. In 1930 they were enumerated in Portland, Multnomah County, OR. John D Stockman died in Portland 3 Jun 1946.

The son of John D Stockman and Hattie LNU, Richard age 4/12 year in 1930 was incorrectly reported to be Richard N Stockman he was Richard Wayne Stockman.

Richard Wayne Stockman was a Private First Class in the 29^th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War and died on 29 Jul 1950 while a captive according to National Archives Records for the Korean War. He was the only Stockman who died in the Korean Conflict. The Honor Roll of the American Battle Monuments Commission lists his date of death as 29 Jul 1950. With the following information:

Private First Class Stockman was a member of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 29th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in Korea on July 29, 1950 and died while a prisoner. His remains were not recovered. Private First Class Stockman was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

In the 1880 census enumeration of John Stockman in Dallas Texas, daughter Ora is recorded aged 4 years. Daughters Affa and Alla, apparently twins are recorded age 5 years. They are living with their father John Stockman and mother Sally Harrington. We can follow these Stockmans because of information found in the California Death Records that Ancestry.com recently made available.

This census has a world of information on the family. Father John Stockman and mother, Sarah (Harrington) Stockman are living in the household. John is a Merchant selling general merchandise and Sara apparently works in the store.

The head of the household is Harry Winn who is married to Appie. Appie is apparently the daughter Affa or Alla enumerated in 1880.

Charlie Gott and Ora are living here with brother-in-law Harry Winn., Charlie is a Cigar salesman.

In 1930 Ora A Gott is living with her husband, Charles H Gott in Humboldt County, CA.

Charles H Gott is listed in the California Death Records index. He had been issued Social Security number 545-32-7378. He was born 21 Jul 1878 in MO and died 14 Sep 1967 in Humboldt Co, CA. His mother’s maiden name was McClure. Strange but true, the Social Security Death Index lists Charles Gott with same rith and death dates, but Social Security number is: 568-26-1992. It had been issued in California prior to 1951. He died in the town of Eureka.

Ora Ann Gott is listed in California Death Records index. She had no Social Security number issued to her. Ora was born 6 Nov 1877 in Texas. Ora died 30 Mar 1956 in Santa Clara County, CA. Her Mother's Maiden Name was Harrington and her Father's Surname was Stockman.

Now let us look at Henry Winn and his wife Appie going back to our earliest information about them. In 1900 a Henry Winn and his wife are living in Anaconda TWP, Deer Lodge County, Montana.

Henry Winn was born April 1866, Hattie born Nov 1875 and daughter Gladis was born April 1898. Henry and Hattie had been married four years and had the one child. The place of birth listings for Hattie do not agree with what we know about the daughters of John Stockman. It is tempting to make Hattie in this family the same person as the daughter of John Stockman. The age agrees closely, the husband’s name is the same and it is known that the brother, young John Stockman, was living in Montana in 1910. However, following this family down through the years we find that Hattie was still living in Montana in Deer Lodge County in 1920, a widow, when Appie and her husband Harry Winn were enumerated in Humboldt County, CA. So this is not the family of Harry Winn and Appie.

Searches for Harry and Appie in previous census records has not been successful.-//-

Vivian Loretta Gilmore the eldest daughter of James Wesley Gilmore and Dora Rebecca
Stockman (William Bonapart Stockman, Young Hardy Stockman, Hardy Francis Stockman, Henry
Stockman, Frederick Stockman and Katherine Disponet of the Texas branch of the family) was born
3 Jan 1933 in Modesto, Stanislaus Co, CA . She graduated from Oakdale Joint Union High School in
1950. Vivian married David Watson and they had two children. They were divorced and she
married for a second time to Otis Carroll Rash and he was the true love of her life.

Vivian worked for Gallo Glass in Modesto until she retired. She moved to Brownsville,
Oregon 10 years ago and previously lived in Waterford, CA for 50 years. Vivian was a member of
Brownsville Christian Church, and volunteered with Sharing Hands and the Brownsville Museum.

She died Jan. 20 at her home in Brownsville and was cremated. Her ashes were returned to
California to be interred on the grave of her husband Carroll.

Vivian is survived by her children, Daniel Watson of Newman, Ga., and Stephanie Watson of
Cudahy, CA ; sisters, Billie June Cole of Waterford and Pamela Rose Verreras of Hickman, CA,
and many caring and loving cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Rash on
5 Oct 1979.

The research to determine the ancestry of Elsworth P Stockman lead to the discovery of another son of David Stockman son of Johann George Stockman the immigrant.

Elsworth P Stockman was born in Maryland and moved to eastern Virginia where he married Jessica Spady. They had four children, Ellsworth, Vernell, Mevie and Pearl. Elsworth is descended from the Maryland branch of the family, but his ancestry is not obvious. In the 1920 census Elsworth’s family is living in Newport News, Warwick County, VA.

In 1910 Jessie and Elsworth P Stockman are living with her parents, Annie and John W Spady. Elsworth is working as a boiler maker in the ship yard and they have been married for one year.

From this information we see that Elsworth’s father, Garrison Stockman was born in MD circa 1845. His full name is Joseph Garrison Stockman.

In the 1890 Baltimore Directory, Joseph G Stockman is living at 810 North Ann Street and employed as a carpenter.

The father, Joseph Garrison Stockman enlisted in Union forces on 6 Sep 1861 and was discharged 29 May 1865. He was in Company B, Thirteenth Maryland Infantry, and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

In 1850 we find Garrison Stockman (Joseph G Stockman) living with his parents in Baltimore County, Maryland. His parents were married in Frederick County where the marriage is recorded: Joseph Stockman married Louisa Price 23 Dec 1841.

Who is Joseph Stockman. Records do not tell us much about him. He was born circa 1808

It is well known that the Frederick County, Stockmans are descendants of Johann George Stockman the immigrant and younger brother of Johann Peter, Johann Engel and Johann Philip Stockman the immigrants of 1749 and 1766. Research done on the Frederick County, Maryland Stockmans, by Phyllis Gerrick and Marjorie Fox does not list Joseph Stockman as the son of any of the sons of Johann George Stockman the immigrant. However, the presence of William P Stockman in the household of Joseph in 1850 gives us a clue. William P Stockman is known to be a son of David Stockman

David Stockman, son of Johann George Stockman and Anna Barbara Heim, married Sophia Waskey in Jun 1806. She was the daughter of August Waskey and Catherina Salome Schau. Sophia was the mother of all of David's children and she died 2 May 1837 and is buried in the Hoffman Family Cemetery Mountville, MD. Following her death David married Elizabeth Waskey on 7 Jun 1838. Elizabeth was the sister of Sophia.

David Stockman died 9 Oct 1864 and was buried in the Methodist Cemetery, Jefferson, MD. He had not made a will and his children were constructed from various family records.

The William P Stockman living with Joseph in Baltimore in 1850, age 33 is the son of David Stockman and Sophia Waskey, William Perry born in 1816. Both William P and Joseph were carpenters.

It appears most likely that Joseph was the eldest son of David Stockman and Sophia Waskey.

While it is possible that Joseph might have been a cousin, a review of what we know about the other sons of Johann Georg Stockman and immigrant does not reveal any other possible candidate for Joseph’s father.

Joseph Stockman born 28 Feb 1808 and died 7 Mar 1881is buried in Union Cemetery, in the town of Jefferson in Frederick County. His wife, Louisa, born 29 Dec 1820 and died 24 Feb 1897 is buried next to him.

1. Jacob Stockman born 14 Jul 1767, married Elizabeth Hutsel Aug 1818, but he may have been married before, seems likely considering his date of birth.. He and Elizabeth's marriage was not a smooth one, Bartgis' Republican Gazette and General Advertiser for 21 Nov 1818 has this notice, "CAUTION This is to forewarn all persons not be trust my wife Betsy, as she has left me without just cause, and for that reason, I do not mean to pay any debt that she contracts from this date. Jacob Stockman". Jacob is not enumerated in 1790, 1800, or 1810 Censuses, in 1820 Jacob has in his household,

2. Johann George Stockman, the son of Johann Geroge, made his will in 1844, does not name a son Joseph . His children are all too young to be father of Joseph

3. Johann Lorenz Stockman made will in 1843, does not name a son Joseph. Oldest child born in 1802.

4. Johann Philip Stockman made will in 1840, does not name a son Joseph. Oldest child born in 1807

5. David Stockman made no will we can find, he married twice, first to Sophia Waskey in Jun 1806, first child we know for them was Caroline born 25 May 1810. This family has been reconstructed from Baptismal records and cemetery records. David was a Carpenter. From Frederick County indentures. "George Stockman binds his son David Stockman, age 18 yrs last 25 April to Andrew Leever, house carpenter, for 3 years 25 April last 4 Aug 1801. Witness Wm. Lucket."

6. Wilhelm Stockman (often recorded as William Stockman, especially in his later years) was youngest son of Johann Georg. He married Elizabeth Montgomery in Dec 1818. They moved to Ohio and the entire family went with them. Their children were listed in, "East Township Pioneers of Carroll county, Ohio, No Joseph in his family.

A look at who is buried in Jefferson cemeteries shows this: David, the son of Johann George, and wife Elizabeth are buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Jefferson. No burial record for Jacob.

So that leaves two possible fathers for Joseph, David and Jacob. David seems to be more likely, being a carpenter and Joseph being a carpenter, Joseph naming his eldest son David, while these are good indicators they are a little thin to hang an ancestry on. Jacob is a real unknown. With all those kids in the 1820 census it is possible the age of one of the boys was mis recorded Joseph would have been 12.

For the time being, until other information come to light that contradicts our conclusion, let us place Joseph in the family of David Stockman the son of Johann Georg Stockman and immigrant.-//-

Virginia (Ginger) Louise Noling was born 22 Sep 1942 in Hemet, Riverside Co, CA. Her birth
parents were Harold Luther Whitaker and Dorcas Cinderella Stockman, but at birth she was adopted
by her birth mother’s sister, Clara Etta Stockman and her husband Dennis Elma Noling. Ginger’s birth
certificate issued in California lists her adopted parents.

Ginger grew up in Lordsburg, Hidalgo Co, NM and there she married Oscar Allen Smith. They
had two children. She then married James Parr for a short time and then married a third time to
Fred Zahn, Jr. They settled in Tucson, AZ.

Ginger suffered from poor health for many years and died 2 Mar 2005 in Tucson, Pima Co, AZ.
She is survived by her husband Fred and her two daughters, Kathy Luella and Donna Louise.

Pierce Stockman brought to our attention that a “Stockman Family Yearbook” is being offered through the mail. The flyer was sent from 1181 South Parker Rd Suite 105, Denver CO.

Research shows that from this same address there are many different surname Family Yearbooks being offered. Comment posted on line regarding these yearbooks for various surnames report that they are nothing but a collection of telephone listings for persons of that surname.

Ann Folk Andrews Stockman 1932- 2005

Ann Folk Andrews was born 9 Dec 1932 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX the daughter of Thorp
Adam Andrews and Ethel May Johnson. Ann married Billie Ray Stockman ( John Raymond Stockman,
John Freeman Stockman, Hardy Francis Stockman, Henry Stockman, Frederick Stockman and
Katherine Disponet of the Texas branch of the family) 4 April 1953 in Tarrant County, TX. They
had two children, Cynthia Ann and David in Texas. Later the family moved to Bernalillo, Bernalillo County,
New Mexico. Ann died 26 April 2005.

Henrietta Stockman, daughter of Henry Stockman and Dorcas Terbite married James N Lewelling 18 Sep 1849 in Nacogdoches County, TX. They lived for a while on the Henry Stockman League in what is now Rusk County. In 1850 they were enumerated one household away from Henry and Dorcas, but Lewelling was recorded as Lewellen.

In 1860 James and his growing family had moved to the Linn Flat community, located about 14 miles north west of Nacogdoches in Nacogdoches County. There they were enumerated in 1860. James N Lewelling in 1860 was recorded correctly in the census.

James N Lewelling served in Company B, 12^th Regiment, Younger Texas Volunteer Infantry as a captain. The 12^th Regiment, Younger Texas Volunteers Infantry was organized in 1862 and operated in the area around Camp Nelson, Arkansas. Where the 12^th became part of the first brigade of Walker’s Greyhounds under the command of Colonel Overton Young. A typical company of Texas volunteers at full strength consisted of 4 Officers, a Captain and & 3 Lieutenants, 9 non commissioned officers, 2 Musicians, and 100 Privates. Therefore it would appear that James N Lewelling was the Company Commander of Company B.

While at Camp Nelson, AR, located near Little Rock, Fifteen hundred soldiers died of measles and pneumonia the first winter. In December they were marched between Camp Nelson and Pine Bluff On 11 Jan1863 they were ordered to Arkansas Post, unaware that the post had fallen that very day. The Division stayed in the Pine Bluff area until the end of April when they were ordered to Alexandria, Louisiana.

From Alexandria the Division went into action at Perkins Landing, Milikins Bend and Young's Point in the Vicksburg area. After the fall of Vicksburg, the Division was ordered down to south Louisiana. The rest of the year brought more marching, fighting and dueling with Federal gunboats in the south Louisiana bayou country, capped by the battle of Bayou Bourbeaux, the Atchafalaya Bayou expedition and Yellow Bayou.

By March 1864, Union General Banks had a force of over 40,000 union troops poised to march up the Red River to Shreveport and into Texas. Walkers Greyhounds were forced to fallback in the face of such overwhelming odds, fighting small skirmishes along the way. On April 8th every Confederate unit from three states were mustered to make a stand near Mansfield. This would be the hottest fight of the war for Walkers Greyhounds and they did the job quite well. The Yankees were beaten back with heavy losses in both men and equipment in a fight that lasted all day and into the night, as the Yankees retreated to Pleasant Hill. The 12th Texas played a pivotal role in the capture of the Nimms and Chicago Mercantile Battery.

Fighting resumed the next morning at Pleasant Hill. Yankee reinforcements and Southern exhaustion more or less led to a push, but the Yankees "advanced to the rear" the next morning. This would not be the end of it for the Greyhounds. Up in Arkansas, General Steele Yankees were making a move on Shreveport from their base in Little Rock. The call came for the Texans and Walkers men were on the road to Camden, AR. to face these Union Forces. On April 30, they met Steele force at Jenkins Ferry on the Saline River in a very hot fight which once again found the Union Forces "advancing to the rear".

With Steele on his way back from where he come, the Greyhounds were once again ordered to Alexandria, Louisiana. Banks and his gunboats were "surrounded" and the Texans were needed to finish him once and for all. Banks evacuated Alexandria on May 19th after doing some river engineering to get the navy out, a few days before the arrival of the Greyhounds.

With Banks no longer a threat, the Texas Division was marched to the Mississippi River with some thought of crossing over but it was not to be. Instead the Greyhounds were marched back up into Arkansas. The Shreveport area would host the Division until the first of March, when orders came to return to Texas.

On15 April 1865 the Division marched into Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Texas. The men were tired of war. News of Robert E. Lee's 9 April surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia added to the gloom. On 19 May 1865 Walkers Greyhounds went home. They didn't surrender, they weren't captured, they had just seen enough of war to know when it was over. On May 19th the men mutinied, seized all transportation and supplies and carried off to their homes everything they could get their hands on. We can only speculate as to the reception that James and his fellow soldiers received upon their arrival at Linn Flat.

Son, John H Lewelling was only 16 years old in 1866 but he was appointed as Postmaster at Linn Flat, 15 Nov 1866 and served until November 1874

On 12 Jun 1874 J N Lewelling was witness to the will of Absolom Barnes in Nacogdoches County.

This is the last record we have of James. He died sometime between 1880 and 1900 presumably in Nacogdoches County. The records of the Linn Flat Cemetery do not show any burials for Lewellings. Henrietta is found in the 1900 census - see son Hyram below..

John H Lewelling married Sarah E Leonard 12 Dec 1870 in Nacogdoches County. In the 1870 census Sarah is living in the household of Jefferson Green a farmer from Alabama and his wife. Sarah, age 19 is keeping house. Relationships are not shown in this census. A Parazella Leonard age 8 yrs born in TX is also in this household.

Son John Lewelling in the 1880 census is living with the Henry Day Family partial enumeration given here as there does not appear to be any connection between John or his wife and this family as POB are different for the parents of John and his wife.

Darcus and Henry Townley have not been found in the 1880 census. The International Genealogical Index tells us that Ed Lewelling was born 28 Sep 1871 in Rusk County, TX.

In 1900 we find Ed Lewelling, the son of John H Lewelling living is Rusk County, TX.

Ed Lewelling married Margaret Blanton. She was born 28 Mar 1874 and died 11 Fe 1948. She was the daughter of Jacob Davidson Blanton and Elizabeth Wealthy Peacock. See www.winterhawke.com for more details on the Blanton Family.

The Daughter, Darcus Augusta Lewelling, known as Gussie, married Henry Mac Townley on 7 July or 7 May 1876 in Denton, Denton County, TX. Henry Townley and Darcus settled in Denton for several years. Records disagree on the date.

By 1900 Dorcas Augusta and Henry Townley had moved to Rusk County where they were enumerated that year.

This census tells us that Henry was born in Sep 1851, Dorcas was born in Aug 1852, Alice was born in Feb 1880, Charley was born in Mar 1882, Fred was born Sep 1883 and John was born April 1891. Dorcas had had five children and all five were still living. She and Henry had been married 23 years. Jeffie Williamson Butler who is descended from Henry and Dorcas Townley reports that there was a sixth child in this family: Robert Watson Townley. Addie Leona Townley who was born in 1887 and married James A Medford is also a child in this family. In 1900 they were living just a few houses down the road from Henry and Dorcas.

This census tells us that James was born in Mar 1876, Addie was born Aug 1877, Willie was born Jan 1897 and Essie was born Feb 1900. James and Addie had been married five years and had the two children listed.

1. Addie Leona Townley, born August 1877 in Denton, TX, died in 1954 in Henderson, Rusk County, TX She married James A Medford. They had six children, Jessie Clifford Townley, Bruce Arnold Townley, Vernice Mae Townley, William Douglas Townley, Wilma Lee Townley and Louis Martin Townley. Addie and James Medford are Jeffie Williamson Butler’s grandparents.

2. Robert Watson Townley, born 13 Jan 1878 in Denton, TX. Robert Townley married Dea Wallace 31 Jan 1895 in Nacogdoches County, TX. He died 14 Apr 1964 in Cherokee County, TX. His wife preceded him in death. Two of their children were, Richard and Robert Jr.

5. Fred Douglas Townley was born 28 Sep 1884 in Denton, TX. He died 28 Oct 1928 in Jacksonville, Cherokee County, TX. Fred married Cereta Ina Williams on 20 Sep 1906. They had six children: Jessie Clifford Townley, Bruce Arnold Townley, Vernice Mae Townley, William Douglas Townley, Wilma Lee Townley (Jeffie Williamson Butler’s mother), and Louis Martin Townley.

The widow, Henrietta Lewelling and her son Hiram Lewelling with his family are enumerated in Smith County, TX in 1900. Henrietta’s son William Tell Lewelling is living with them.

This census tells us that Hiram was born Mar 1856, Robert was born Jan 1889, Henrietta was born Dec 1826, and William was born Oct 1866.

This is the last record we can find for Henrietta or William Tell Lewelling. Cemetery records in Smith County do not list either of them.

A search of cemetery records for Smith County tells us that Hiram F Lewelling’s wife, listed by initials only, E A Lewelling was born 30 Dec 1869 and died 19 May 1896. She is buried in the Elkins Cemetery in Smith County.

The son of Hiram Lewelling, Robert was enumerated in 1910 in Magdalena, New Mexico and Hiram is living with them.
