Elizabeth Disponet, sister of Katherine Disponet who married Frederick Stockman, (the progenitors of the Texas branch of the family), was mentioned in her father’s will as Elizabeth Yaw. Until recently little had been discovered about Betsey’s family.
On 30 Jun 1806 Richard Yaw married Betsy Dispinette (sic) in St Martin Parish, Louisiana. This marriage record was recorded prior to the use of a Marriage Records book and is located in the miscellaneous files. In the 1810 census Richard Yaw was enumerated in Avoyelles Parish on page 113

The three males aged 26-45, surely include Richard Yaw, but the other two have not been identified.
Near the end of the War of 1812, British forces were preparing to land at New Orleans. Richard Yaw served in the 17, 18, and 19th Conscripted Regt of Louisiana Militia. These volunteers were from Avoyelles, Rapides, Natchitoches, Catahoula and Ouachita Parishes. Also serving in this same unit was George Stockman, son of Katherine Disponet and Frederick Stockman. Richard Yaw was killed or died during his service in the Louisiana Militia. It is interesting that George Stockman also lost his life while serving in this regiment.
In the 1820 census Elizabeth Yaw was enumerated in St Landry Parish, Louisiana page 109.

The Two children that are known for Elizabeth and Richard Yaw were son, William Yaw and daughter Mary Yaw. No information has been developed on the other male and female enumerated in this census. It should be remembered that this is an enumeration of those in the household and there they were not necessarily children of Elizabeth Yaw
Although Mary Yaw was the younger of the two children about which we know something we will report on her first as less is know about her. Mary Yaw married William Bundick 11 Nov 1833. This marriage has been mis indexed as William Bundick and Mary Laws. Mary and William moved to Gonzales Co, TX after the census was taken in 1850.

Eula Strange and Rosa Lee Osborn told the story of “Big Jess” Stockman who come to visit with the Granger family in Mt Calm when Eula and Rosa Lee were young ladies. A request for identification of “Big Jess” was published in Vol 2 #2 of The Stockman Family Newsletter and then after the death of Eula, Rosa Lee found a photo of “Big Jess” and it was published in Vol 14 #4 of the Newsletter. Several of the descendants of Young Leonard Stockman (William Henry Stockman, Hardy Francis Stockman, Henry Stockman, Frederick Stockman and Katherine Disponet of the Texas branch of the family), including L Dean Mooney and Flossie Buie, recognized “Big Jesse” Stockman. Dean said that the photo published in the Newsletter was identical to one that once hung at home. Jesse was a brother of Young Leonard Stockman.
Jesse Stockman was born ca 1879 the third child of William Henry Stockman and Margaret Katherine Williams. Jesse married Bessie Caldwell, but little more was know of him. Eula and Rosa Lee reported that they remembered “Big Jesse” living in Pennsylvania. Last year the US Census Bureau released the 1930 Census of the United States and has become available on line at Ancestry.com. Jesse Stockman has been located in this census.

In the last issue of The Stockman Family Newsletter in the article, “Texas Death Records Update” one of those listed was Cecilia August Stockman. Douglas Leroy Stockman, her son reports that the correct name for her mother is Cecil Augusta Stockman. She is the Cecil Stockman who is buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery in another article in the same issue of the Newsletter. Douglas continues, ”She was my mother and married to Mathew Stockman, also buried at Mount Olive Cemetery. Mathew Stockman was my father and son of Hiram J Stockman and Lucy Graves. Cecil Stockman was the daughter of Gus Whitley and Fannie Smith.”
There is some confusion about this family. Several researchers report the father is John W Stockman, but in 1870 and in 1880 census records his name is recorded as James W Stockman born in AL.

This is the only James Stockman in any Alabama census that is near the age of James W in the later census records. The conclusion that can be drawn from this “best evidence available” is that James W Stockman who was born in Alabama and lived as an adult in KY is the same person as the lad, James who was the son on William Stockman and Elizabeth Watson.
In 1860 James is enumerated with his parents who had moved from Wilcox County to Marengo County, AL, and his age is recorded as 12 years.

William Stockman the father of this James is the son of John George Stockman and his first Wife, Hannah Dickert. John George was the son of Peter Stockman of the 1790 census of Newberry Co, SC, and the son of Johann Engel Stockmann the immigrant. Some confusion exists about this family. In old research done on John George Stockman he is reported to be the son of Barbara Stockman of the 1790 census of Newberry County, South Carolina, however, more recent research shows that John George is the son of Peter Stockman.
He married Hannah Dickert and had a son William and possibly a second son Henry Cooper who was in Wilcox County but had moved to Ouachita County, Arkansas prior to the 1850 census. Hannah apparently died and John George Stockman married for a second time to Rebecca Pow. Rebecca’s maiden name has often been reported as Rebecca Hair, but probate recorded for her brother prove her maiden name was Pow.
Interesting Sidelight to This Family
At the Stockman Family Reunion of July 2002, Sharon and John Stockman attended. Sharon commented that they had gotten acquainted with a Jackie Stockman and wondered if they were possibly related. Well, Johann Engel Stockman the immigrant had other sons and one of them was Frederick Stockman who had son Henry Stockman who had son Hardy Francis Stockman who had son John Freeman Stockman who was the grandfather of John Stockman who is married to Sharon.
When it was determined that Sharon and Jackie were indeed part of the same family they were both delighted.

Some of the photos taken at the Reunion in Silver City this last summer have been put on line. A grand time was had by all who attended and this has been captured in the expressions of those in the photos. It had been my intention to have all the photos done, but time has not permitted. Hopefully in the future it will be possible to add more pages of photographs to this project. Thumb nails of the photos are links to the larger photo. If you wish to down load a photo, right click your mouse on it and save the file to disk. The link to photo pages is:

<>Texas Reunion> Monell Helms has suggested a July date for the Texas Reunion which will be held in Groesbeck. Ronnie and Gala Nettles, as many of you know, suffered a house fire last year and are still not fully recovered from that disaster. An exact date has not yet been set, but a special mailing will let everyone know when and details of the reunion gathering.
P.S. Just for those who want to know, Mondell, in her letter says, “....this “little ole lady” will turn 80 years old June 23rd. My kids are planning a big “blow out” of some kind, They have not told me exactly what they are going to do so I am thinking seriously about leaving town.....” Mondell’s e-mail address is: monk@glade.net and her mailing address is:

<>1930 Census> The appearance of the 1930 census makes a great mass of new information available for family history researchers. Seeing the films of the full census records is still difficult as they are available in only a few places, but Ancestry.com has placed a full name index on their web site for use by their subscribers. The information in this newsletter which is from the 1930 census was recreated from this all name index.
<>Chapter Three Included with this Newsletter is Chapter three of The History of the Stockman and Related Families covering the journey from the old world to the new. The hazards were not just the wild dark Atlantic Ocean, but also human. We are all here because they faced the challenge and succeeded. >
