Dorothy M Gilmore 1936 - 2008
William Neil Gilmore 1936 - 2009
Dorothy and Willie both passed away within a few short months of each other, both died quietly with no apparent serious illeness.
Dorothy M Gilmore was born 2 June 1936 in Sterling, Rice County, Kansas, the daughter of Frank Hail and Annapearl Meine. When Dorothy was three years old the family moved to Sweet Home, Oregon. She attended Foster Grade School and Sweet Home High School. Dorothy had lived in Brownsville, Oregon for over 40 years.
Willie was born in 6 Aug 1939 in Stanislaus County, CA, the son of Chester Lee Gilmore and Rose Nell Stockman (William Bonapart Stockman, Young Hardy Stockman, Hardy Francis Stockman, Henry Stockman, Frederick Stockman and Katherine Disponet of the Texas branch of the family)
Dorothy and Willie were married in November 1967 in Reno, NV
For many years Willie operated a retail store in Brownsville. Following Dorothy’s death Willie came to the Family Reunion in Apple Valley traveling with his cousin Leslie Beard. He returned home and appeared to be doing well. Willie asked that the picture of Dorothy and their great grand daughter be added to her obituary.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time at the Brownsville, Senior Center and watching soap operas. She loved decorating her home for Christmas and the holidays and liked crafts and collecting antiques.
Dorothy and Willie are survived by Willie’s brother Gerald Bruce and Loyce Gilmore, daughter Leeanna Putney of Brownsville, sons Craig Putney of Albany and Carmen Putney of Sweet Home, Dorothy’s sister Shirley Elliott of Lebanon, brother Leroy Hall of Redmond, five grandchildren, six Great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Grave side services were held on Tuesday 23 Dec at the Lewis Cemetery, Sweet Home, OR and a memorial service was held on 28 Dec at the Brownsville, Christian Church for Dorothy.
Willie passed away 20 June 2009 and was buried beside Dorothy.
Peter Stockman sentenced to 2 years in Penitentiary
In the San Antonio Daily Express. 23 Feb 1886 appears a short article as follows:
FROM FREDERICKSBURG, TEX.
Work of the District Court – The long needed Rain, Etc.
Fredericksburg, Tex., February 22 – Special – District court has been in session for the last week
Peter Stockman, indicted for forgery, received two years in the penitentiary........
The remainder of the article makes no further mention of Peter Stockman or the events that caused his indictment for forgery.
At the time of this report the area around Fredericksburg saw several of the sons of Hardy Francis Stockman moving in and out of the area. It is possible that this Peter Stockman was Peter Russell Stockman, Hardy Francis Stockman’s son, but more information is needed to verify this conjecture. -//-
James W stockman of Alabama - a more complete Story
At the Stockman Family Reunion in Apple Valley, this year, Terry Stockman came seeking information on his family. He introduced himself, and identified his family in the 1920 census of Mississippi County, Missouri. Because of this additional information it has been possible to do a more thorough coverage of this family.
The James W Stockman we are following has been reported in multiple years with his age recorded. These records show his birth has having occurred in various years:
In the year birth year
1861 1835
1870 1845
1876 1836
1878 1838
1880 1834
Here is the story of James W Stockman as it pieces its self together beginning in 1850 when James was living with his parents, William Stockman and Elizabeth Watson in Wilcox County, Alabama.

Son, James Stockman from the information in this census was born circa 1843 and is the only James in any Alabama census that is near the age of James W Stockman in the later census records. A James Stockman , age 3 yrs old (born 1847), son of Samuel Stockman and Martha LNU was enumerated in 1850 in Dallas County, Alabama. He is the only other James with a birth date anywhere near that of James W Stockman. This young James and his parents disappear from all records after the 1850 census.
In 1860 William has moved to Marengo County, Alabama.

The age for James in this census appears to have been recorded incorrectly.
William Stockman the father of this James is the son of John George Stockman and his first Wife, Hannah Dickert. He was born 3 Nov 1806. John George was the son of Peter Stockman of the 1790 census of Newberry Co, SC, and the son of Johann Engel Stockmann the immigrant. Some confusion exists about this family. In old research done on John George Stockman he is reported to be the son of Barbara Stockman of the 1790 census of Newberry County, South Carolina, however, more recent research shows that John George is the son of Peter Stockman.
He married Hannah Dickert and had a son William and probably a second son Henry Cooper who was in Wilcox County prior to 1845 but had moved to Ouachita County, Arkansas . Hannah Dickert died and John George Stockman married for a second time to Rebecca Pow. Rebecca’s maiden name has often been reported as Rebecca Hair, but probate recorded for her brother prove her maiden name was Pow.
William Stockman married Elizabeth Lethy Watson 22 Dec 1831. He died 30 Apr 1897 and is buried in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Marengo Co, AL. His head stone says “Billy Stockman”.
James Stockman in the Civil War
The reports extracted from captured Confederate records bear the names, James Stockman, J Stockman, Jas Wash Stockman and James Wash Stockman. He may have been in Arkansas where his uncle Henry Cooper Stockman was living in Ouachita County.
James Stockman enlisted in Co D second Regt of Arkansas volunteer Infantry 1 Jun 1861, at Mariana Arkansas. Shortly after the organization of the unit, it was sent to Virginia where it served.
The 34th Illinois Infantry, USA, single handedly over ran the positions of the Second Arkansas and captured their colors.
James W Stockman is found on a list of Prisoners Of War shipped by the Provost Marshall from Lexington, KY to Louisville, KY, not dated Captured Nov 29, year not stated but this was surely 1862 for a second record shows James W Stockman, Pvt, Co D 2nd regt Ark Cav.(sic) Sent by steamboat “City of Madison” for exchange, POW, from Louisville, KY to Vicksburg, MS. 5 Dec 1862 age 26 yrs. Another record reveals that James was captured at Harrodsburg, KY sent to Vicksburg via Cairo Dec 5 1862.
James W Stockman suffered from illness during much of his enlistment and a Certificate of Disability, for discharge in the case of J W Stockman a private Company D 2nd Arkansas Regt Infantry was prepared by the unit surgeon. This record shows that “He was born in Perry County in the State of Alabama. Is 26 years of age. 5 feet ? Inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes dark hair and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty 60 days. Discharged 26 Dec 1862"
This record ties James W Stockman back to the family of John George Stockman who was living in Perry County, AL at the time James was born. In this family only, son William Stockman had a son James who was of a proper age to be the James W Stockman who lived in McCracken county, KY.
In 1870 James W Stockman appears in McCracken County, KY already married with family.

Kentucky Death Records list the little girl, Liza: Eliza Stockman age 6 years. died 23 Nov 1875 in McCracken County, KY. Parents: James W and Martha A Stockman, Father born in Alabama Mother born in Kentucky. Cause of death “congestive chill repertory”.
This was not the only death in James W Stockman’s family for apparently his wife died sometime between 1870 and 1876. We can assume that the wives died as divorce was a very rare event in the 1870-80 time period. Marriage records show that J W Stockman, age 40 and Mary Atkins age 26 were married in McCracken County, KY, Second marriage for both, on Sep 26, 1876. J W born in Alabama. Mary Atkins birth not stated Their marriage did not last long for a second marriage is recorded: J W Stockman, age 40, born in Alabama, third marriage to Eliza J Fox age 28, born in KY third marriage, 21 Nov 1878. Death visited the family once again for in the 1880 census, James W is recorded as a widow.
The 1880 census records James W Stockman in this manner:

In 1900 the two sons, James P W Stockman and Robert E A Stockman who were recorded in the 1880 census are found both living in McCracken County, KY. Son Thomas M Stockman has not been found. James ( the son) and his sister Marry were living in Paducah, McCracken County, KY. boarders living with Mary Jones

This census is a little confusing, is Ada mother in law of Raymond or of Robert? Comparison of Place of Birth for mothers leads us to the conclusion that Ada A Pike is the mother of Mary J Wife of Robert. There fore Mary J Pike would be her maiden name. This information is confirmed by Devin Stockman, who is descended from these families. He reports that, wife of Raymond Stockman maiden name was Mabel M Pittman. Their marriage was in Pike County, 9 Nov 1918
