Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman

Generally early members of the Stockman Family fall into one of two categories, those about whom we know a great deal and those about whom we know very little. Ivy Belton Carwile (IBC) Stockman fits neither of these categories, we know a great deal about him, his wife, and children, but very little about his parents and siblings.

Wearing His Confederate Uniform

Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman was born 20 Jan 1825, surely in Newberry County, South Carolina for that is where he lived his entire life until he went into Confederate Service. He died from disease in Wilmington, NC while serving in Company H of Holcombe Legion.7 March 1863. It is interesting to note that Company H, commanded by Captain James M Maffett, survived to the end of the war and many of its members were discharged at Appomattox, following General Robert E Lee’s surrender to General Grant. The body of IBC Stockman was returned to Newberry County and he is buried in the old Cemetery at the Zion Methodist Church.

IBC married Mary Polly Dominick who was born 10 Sep 1821 and lived until 14 Mar 1895. She is buried next to IBC in the old Cemetery at the Zion Methodist Church. She was the daughter of Henry Dominick II. She never remarried following the death of IBC.

In his pioneering book on the Stockman Family, Notes on the Stockman Name, Abner Pierce Stockman, who was descended from IBC and Mary Polly reported that IBC and Mary Polly probably lived on an old road, no longer passable, between the Holly Ferry Road (County Road 71) and Calk’s Ferry Road (County Road 26). Residents of the Zion Community in Newberry County remember a large old two story house on this road known as the Polly Stockman house.

The Children of IBC and Mary Polly Dominick were:

1.        Mary Catherine Stockman, born 1847, married George Taylor. In 1880 they were living in Stony Battery, Newberry County, The children enumerated with them were: James Taylor, born 1866, Ira Taylor born 1876, Ellen Taylor born1878 and John Taylor born in Jan or Feb 1880.

2.        Salome Elizabeth Stockman, born 17 Nov 1848, died 9 Nov 1872. She married J P Bowers. She is buried in the old cemetery at Zion Methodist Church next to her mother.

3.         Andrew Carwile Stockman, born 9 Aug 1850, died 13 Sep 1925 in Greenwood County, SC. He married Mary Marcilla Dominick 17 Oct 1872. Mary was born 31 July 1856, and died 28 Mar 1922. She was the daughter of Henry Middleton Dominick and Rhoda Banks. Andrew Carwile Stockman and Mary Marcilla are buried in the Edgewood Cemetery, Greenwood, SC. In 1880 they were living in Stony Battery, Newberry County.

4.         Nancy Caroline Stockman was born in 1852 and married Samuel W Dominick. In 1880 they were living in Stony Battery, Newberry County. The children enumerated in the family at that time were: George B Dominick born 1872, Salome M Dominick born 1874, Mary Dominick born 1876, and Arilla Dominick born in 1872.

5.        George Frederick Stockman was born 1 Mar 1854 and died 13 Jun 1937. He married Martha Alice Dominick. They had four children; Edward Stockman; William Stockman; Robert Stockman; and Sara Stockman who married a FNU Boland. After the death of his first wife George Frederick Stockman married a widow, Mrs. Sally Black.

6.         John Wesley Stockman was born 4 Dec 1856 and died 15 May 1936. He married Sarah Viney Bowers and had seven children; Sid Stockman, a daughter, born 11 Feb 1882 and died 23 Jun 1921 is buried at Zion Methodist Church in Newberry County; Pat Stockman; Ophelia Stockman; George H. Stockman, who was born Sept. 10, 1885 and died May 30, 1963, married B. Garrett, buried in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery; Paul Stockman, who married Blanche Krell.;. Frederick Stockman, who married Agnes Krell; and Rosa Stockman, who married John Enlow. Following the death of his first wife, Sarah, John Wesley Stockman married Miss Victoria Crosson and moved to Prosperity. Before this, he had lived in the first large two story house on the right of Road 71 below the intersection with Road 116, the Zion Methodist Church Road.

7.         James Hampton Stockman, son of Ivy Belton C. Stockman and Polly, was born April 16, 1859 in Newberry County near Zion Methodist Church and died Nov. 3, 1928 in Greenwood County. He married Elvie Frances Shealy, who was born Feb. 17, 1861 and died Dec. 23, 1923. Elvie Frances was the daughter of John George Shealy and his wife Catherine Boland. John George was born Aug. 30, 1815 and died Jan 16, 1892. Catherine Boland was the daughter of Abram Boland. Elvie Frances was the granddaughter of William Shealy and his wife Polly Werts.. James Hampton and Elvie Frances were the parents of the following children: George Wesley Stockman, born Aug 19, 1884 and died April 10, 1902; Eula Mell Stockman born Jan. 1886 and died Sept. 29, 1905, married to the Rev. W. P. Way; John W. Stockman born May 28, 1887, died March 24, 1902; Katie Mell Stockman, born Feb. 17, 1889 and died June 3, 1973, married Tilman Dominick; and Leila Frances Stockman, born Sept. 7, 1890 and died Dec. 10, ?, married Horace Warner.

8.         Andrew Belton Stockman, known as Stuck, married Mary Nancy Bowers. He was born May 20, 1862 and died March 20, 1944. He is buried in the cemetery of Zion Methodist Church, Newberry County. They had the following children: J. Henry Stockman born 1888 and died 1966, buried in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry County and Tom Stockman.

Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman’s Parents - Who were They?

While we know when IBC was born we do not have any record of who his parent were. Could there be a clue in his name? Dr. Ivy Finch was a doctor who lived near Pomaria in Newberry County, SC; Judge Belton O'Neal a contemporary was the author of The Annals of Newberry and John Brown Carwile was a teacher and Tax Collector in Newberry County all living there at the time IBC was born.

None of these men had any special connection to the Stockman Family, unless possibly one of them was related to the mother of IBC.

It has been suggested by several Newberry County genealogical researchers that IBC might be a son of John Henry Stockman (Henry Stockman, Ingle Stockman the immigrant) but no proof of this has been found. Circumstantial evidence supports this theory. John Henry Stockman married Mary Magdalena Wheeler and they had a son Leander Stockman who was born 4 Oct 1831 and died 16 Dec 1858. He is buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry Co, SC and when IBC died he was buried next to Leander. John Henry Stockman married Nancy Harmon after the death of Mary Magdalena Wheeler and when Nancy Harmon Stockman died she named Andrew Carwile Stockman, one of the sons of IBC as executor of her will (see article regarding her will later on in this newsletter). At this time the suggestion that John Henry Stockman had been married once prior to his marriage to Mary Magdalena Wheeler and that IBC was a son of this marriage appears to be the best guess to explain his parents.

There are several Stockmans in Newberry County for whom parents cannot be determined. They all appear in the 1850 census and include, John Quincy Adams Stockman and Elizabeth Stockman who married Simeon Miller.-//-

David Stockman of President Reagan’s Administration

Many family members have wondered if and how they might be related to David Stockman who was a Congressman from Michigan and who served during the Administration of President Reagan as Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Much speculation about the possible relationship of David Stockman began when it was discovered that he was born 10 Nov 1946 in Texas. Was he a post World War II product of the Texas branch of the family? Until recently the answer eluded family researchers, but with the recent release of the 1930 census an answer to this question is at hand.

David was born on Camp Hood Military Reservation (later renamed Fort Hood), the son of Allan Stockman and Carol Bartz. Allan Stockmann was born in Michigan, the son of Matthew Stockmann the immigrant. Matthew settled in St Joseph, Berrien County, MI. St Joseph is a shore front community on Lake Michigan. The story told in David Stockman’s biography, Stockman by Owen Ullmann, is that David’s name on his birth certificate accidentally omitted the second “N” in his surname.

David Stockman’s father, Allen is enumerated in 1930 in the HH of his father.

David’s Grandfather, as we see, was born in Poland. Living near this family is the family of Ed Stockmann who was born in Russia and is possibly related to Mathew Stockmann. A third Stockman family is residing in Berrien County in 1930, Alfred Stockman from England, apparently no relation to David Stockman’s family.

Any relationship between the descendants of the early German immigrants and David Stockman is lost for two centuries in Europe if it exits at all.-lts-

The Family of Hiram H Stockman

susanmilsapstockman.jpgSusan Millsap Stockman

Hiram H Stockman, youngest son of Henry Stockman (Frederick Stockman and Katherine Disponet of the Texas branch of the family) and Dorcas Trebite married Susan M Millsap, 8 Oct 1857 in Gillespie County, TX. Hickman Duncan, Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony.

Hiram and Susan had no children, but adopted a girl, Virginia May, who was born 16 May 1872 in Illinois. The circumstance of her adoption by Hiram and Susan is illuminated somewhat by Virginia’s daughter Chester. Chester remembered that Virginia’s mother was a Miss Hartman the father’s name is not known. The biological parents were thought to be a traveling show couple who left Virginia with Hiram and Susan when they went on the road. It is not know if they were related to either Hiram or Susan, were friends, or why Hiram and Susan were selected to care for Virginia. It was believed that Virginia’s parents were fairly well off because of the quality of the clothing they left with her. They never returned and Virginia was adopted by Hiram and Susan.

On her death certificate completed by daughter, Chester Earl, Virginia’s place of birth is listed as Illinois and that of her mother and father as Illinois.

In the 1880 census, the family of Hiram H Stockman and Susan Milsap was enumerated in Bell County, TX:

Smith Milsap is believed to be Susan’s brother.

Hiram H Stockman died 4 Feb 1884 and Susan M Stockman died 6 Jun 1885. At this time they were living near Susan’s mother and step father in Bell County and near Hiram’s family it is probable that Virginia was cared for by the family. Note that in the Whitaker Family Bible Susan’s middle name is written as “Em”.

Virginia married Chester Harrison Whitaker in Lampasas County, TX 12 Aug 1888. At this time her cousin, William Henry Stockman and his family were in Lampasas County and prior to the marriage she was probably living with them. Chester Whitaker was born 4 Feb 1865 in GA.

In 1880 Chester was living with his family in Chappell Hill, Chambers Co, AL.

O Whitaker, the father, was a farmer, Mother America J was keeping house and sons Chester H and John H were working as laborers. Here we can speculate on some of the names of the children of Chester and Jennie. Hiram Obadiah was no doubt named for his two grandfathers. Amma Jane was probably named for her grandmother, America J Whitaker.

In 1900 Chester and Jennie were living in Runnels County, Precinct 1,

Chester was employed as a farmer and the family was living on 66 acres but the ownership of the land was noted in the census by a “?” mark. The Census reported that Jennie was mother of 2 children six still living. This was an error, of course, she was mother of 8 children 6 were still living. Evidently the census taker had recorded the two deceased children instead of total children born.

Shortly before the 1920 census, Chester Whitaker died during one of the influenza epidemics following the end of World War I on 10 Jan 1919 while the family was living in Sherwood, Irion County, he is buried in the Sherwood Cemetery. Son Hiram Obadiah died 17 Dec 1918.    The family has not been found in 1920 due to lack of an index but in 1930 the diminishing family was living in Irion

Additions and Corrections

L Dean Mooney writes to correct two errors in the Eulogy of Elsie Eureita Mooney Wilson which appeared on Page 63 Vol 16 #4 of the Stockman Family Newsletter. In that issue it was incorrectly reported that she was survived by a brother, Leona Daliel Mooney of San Jose. This should have read, “Leon Daniel Mooney of San Jose, CA”. Also, it should be noted that the middle name of Elsie should be spelled, “Eureitha” as that is the way it appears on her birth certificate. Elsie’s mother, always spelled her middle name “Eureita” and that is how the discrepancy came about.

The Will of Nancy Stockman of South Carolina

Nancy Harmon was born 5 Nov 1801, the daughter of John Leonard Harmon and his wife, Mary Langford. She first married Michael Kinard, Jr, who was born 10 Apr 1802 and died 13 Oct 1833. Nancy Harmon Kinard then married John Henry Stockman, widower of Mary Magdalena Wheeler. The family had children and two sets of step children living together.

There is a general belief among some that John Henry Stockman had been married prior to his marriage to Mary Magdalena Wheeler and that there were children from this first marriage and one of these children was Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman. Proof of this widely held belief has yet to be found.

Children of John Henry Stockman and Mary Magdalena Wheeler were: 1. Leander Stockman who was born 4 Oct 1831 and died 16 Dec 1858. He is buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry Co, SC. And 2. Sarah Ann Barbara Stockman, born 1 Jan 1833 she married 6 May 1860 Levi Amick, son of David Amick & Anna Nancie Long. Sarah Ann Barbara Stockman died 22 Jun 1923.

Nancy Harmon Kinard and John Henry Stockman had two children: 1. Amanda Nancy Stockman who was born 18 May 1836 and married William Simpson Harmon who died 12 May 1865. She died 2 Oct 1892 and was buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry, SC. They had two sons, John S Harmon b 18 Aug 1861, & William B Harmon born 7 Jul 1864. 2. John H Stockman who was born 17 Jul 1840 and died 30 Mar 1865 while serving in Co G of SC Volunteers, CSA. He was buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry Co, SC. 3. Martha E Stockman, born 27 Dec 1843 and died 7 Jun 1880. She is buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Newberry Co, SC. In 1880 She was enumerted with her sister Amanda Nancy Harmon page 222B Newberry Co, SC Census

The Children of Nancy Harmon and her first husband were: 1. Bennet J Kinard born 11 Dec 1830 and died 30 Aug 1862. 2. Sparta Kinard, who married Langdon Chiveous Kibler.

Nancy Harmon Kinard Stockman made her will 25 Oct 1878 and died 20 Dec 1878. She is buried in the Zion Methodist Church cemetery in Newberry County, SC Apparently by the time of her death only two of her children were still living for her will lists only Amanda Nancy Harmon and Martha Elizabeth Stockman.

A C Stockman and Simeon Miller who were appointed as Executors of the estate of Nancy Stockman widow of John Henry Stockman offer some opportunity for conjecture. Simeon Miller married Elizabeth Stockman who was born 9 Nov 1821 and died 10 Jan 1898. Simeon Miller who was born 29 Apr 1828 and died 26 Sep 1907. The parents of Elizabeth Stockman are not know. A C Stockman was the son of Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman whose parents are also not know. Several Newberry County Researchers suspect that Ivy Belton Carwile Stockman may be a son of John Henry Stockman by a first marriage that has not been known to us. Could Elizabeth Stockman have been one of these children too? Further research into the Children of John Henry Stockman is needed. -//-
