Luther Lavell Stockman

I am trying to locate the relatives of my paternal grandfather, Luther Lavell Stockman (I'm not sure of the exact spelling). I don't have a lot to go on, but I do know that he came to Britain during WWII (where he met my grandmother) and that he died in the Normandy landings on D-Day. Have you got any info that might help me or some pointers in the right direction?

Gill Stockman - Australia

Dear Lee,

Hello, my name is Emma and I live in Victoria, Australia. I'm interested to know about my distant relatives, as my Great Grandfather was Gill Stockman. He married Ida Tabb, and they had two boys, Peter and David. Their origin is England but my Great Grandparents emigrated to Australia in what year, I’m not exactly sure (but I can find out). I was curious as to know if this connects with anything you know? I've e-mailed Shari, and she referred me to you, so anything would be great. I hope to hear from you soon,

Emma - "Emma V" < emmav@hotmail.com>

Steckman Family Pennsylvania

Hello --

I note you are researching STECKMAN and other spellings. In my family line some of the Steckman SURNAMES I have are: John, Christina, Demo, Frederick, George, Henry, James C., John W., Joseph, Laura, Lovis, and Philip. If you have reason to believe these may be part of your tree--and were in Bedford Co. Pa at one time [some later moved to other states, I believe]--I'd be glad to be in touch with you.

William Stockman from Denmark

My Stockman ancestor came from Denmark and he is a total mystery! His name was William Stockman and he states he immigrated from Denmark about 1865 when he would have been 16 years old (just before mandatory military registration at age 17). He was born 26 Oct 1849. He married Katherine Birmingham in Boone County, Iowa on 3 Jan 1881. I can find no record of him in the USA from 1865 until his wedding in 1881.

All census records, death record and obituary just say Denmark ... no city/state is ever mentioned.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Francis Stockman from England

Our family came from England, Francis Stockman and family went to Mercer Co. MO, his son Francis and his family went to Pueblo, Colorado. He was known as Frank, his wife died?, and he remarried in Kansas. I have attached a GEDCOM file from my family tree. I do have another leg for daughter JANE Bethany STOCKMAN. I don't have it sorted and in the program yet but will get it there. I also have some information on JOHN WESLEY STOCKMAN, and will have more this summer as I will see Mary Jane Stockman-Smith, she is still alive and remembers the past as if it were yesterday.

George Stockman Hamilton

Dear Lee, My uncle, George Stockman Hamilton,( DOB 6 Oct 1913 to Jan 1982) was born and raised in Dayton, Montgomery Co Ohio. He was buried in Woodland Cemetery Xenia, Greene Co. Ohio. I'm going on a short genealogical trip and won't be back til Thurs. eve. Sorry this info probably won't be very helpful. I'll look up Wilhelm Stockman on Census info and see what turns up. Thanks

Mary Stockman from Germany

I don't know if I'm related or not, but I was very interested in the family home page. My gg grandmother was a MARY STOCKMAN who married CHARLES HENRY FREDERICK SCHMIDT. They were from Germany, my g grandfather was HENRY AUGUST GEORGE SCHMIDT. They came to Australia abt. 1872 when Henry was abt 1 yrs old. My heart jumped when I saw a Mary on the family list but it didn't pan out but I saw that one of the Stockman boys married a Schmidt which was interesting because they could even be linked to my family. So I thought maybe if you come across anything relevant to this information I would gratefully hear from you.

Thanking You

James and John Ruben Stockman - Tennessee

I am looking for any information on James Stockman who married Jane Wake. Their son was John Ruben Stockman who married Clarica Chase. I think they may have all ended up in Davidson Co, Tennessee. They may have been from New York area (that's where Clarica was born) or could have come from around VA (that's where most of my names end up from). I know that John Ruben Stockman was born December 29, 1857, died June 15, 1950. That would mean James was born at least some time before 1840. Any of this familiar to any one else?

George W Stockman - Porterville, CA

Porterville obituaries 1890 to 1996, list the death of Mrs. G H Stockman on 1 Oct 1918. Buried in the Vandalia Cemetery in Porterville, Tulare County, California is Mr. G H Stockman. No other information on his head stone. The Vandalia Cemetery, is the oldest cemetery in Porterville, the first burial being in 1864. Many years ago this cemetery was called Plano as it is on Scranton Street off of Plano but legally it has always been Vandalia.

The Home of Peace Cemetery in Porterville, Tulare County, California has two burials which may have a bearing on these Stockmans. Mrs Mary F Stockman, age 48 born 19 Feb 1870 died 30 Sep 1918 is buries in plot B-13-4. Burial took place on 2 Oct 1918. George W Stockman b 1 Apr 1880 TX d 18 Jan 1959 and is buried in plot C-108-6 Burial took place on 21 Jan 1959.

Analysis of this evidence seems to tell us that Mrs. G H Stockman of the obituary is the same person as Mary F Stockman who died 30 Sep 1918. Was she later moved to the Home of Peace Cemetery? It would appear she was the wife of George H Stockman. George H Stockman’s headstone says he was born in TX. No child had been found in Texas in the 1880 or 1900 census who might be this George H Stockman. Who is He?

Nathan Stockman of Northumberland Co, PA.

Nathan Stockman the Irish Immigrant who came to the new world in 1765 with his parents, James and Isabella Stockman. They settled in Chester Co, PA where the father, James died in 1778. Nathan married Mary Rean or Roan and they settled in Beaver Falls, Beaver Co, PA.

Apparently the family was in Northumberland Co, PA for a time because Bell's History of Northumberland Co PA Contains the following information:

County Commissioners were elected annually for the term of three years until the adoption of the constitution of 1873, which provided for the triennial election of the entire board of three members. Diligent search has failed to discover any minutes of the board prior to 1781, and this list for the years 1772-81 is based upon Linn's Annals of Buffalo Valley.

Nathan Stockman served as a member of the board of County Commissioners in 1796-97, 97-98, and 1798-99.

In the 1800 census Nathan Stockman and a John Stockman, probably his brother, were enumerated in Chester Co, PA. Shortly after that census they moved to Beaver Co where Nathan lived until he died. Several of his children moved to Natchez, MS where their descendants lived for many generations.-lts-

At the time of the marriage, Hiram and the Minor family were probably living in Blanco County, TX. The 1860 census for this county has been lost so no record of the family there can be found. However, in 1870, Hiram and Susan were living in Bell Co, TX and nearby was the family of Martin T Minor.

The Stockman -Schneider Family History

This history compiled by Mrs. Martha Caldwell and Mrs. Patrece Ewing, with additions and editing by Cecil Stockman and was published in Wandering Volhynians in September 1990.

Peter, son of Jakob Stockman and Doretta (nee Scholtz) was born June 11, 1853 at Mentno, Lausche, Poland. His wife, Wilhelmine Schiller, was born in Orlin, Kalisch, Poland. Both were Lutherans of German ancestry.

After they were married they moved to Volhynia, Russia. It was almost impossible for non Russians to buy land, unless they became Orthodox Greek Catholics, so for a few years they rented land but living conditions became worse and about 1883 they moved to Galatz, Rumania. In 1885 they returned to Zhitomir, Volhynia, where a number of families were preparing to emigrate to Canada in search of religious and political freedom, and the right to own land.

In April of 1895 the group left Zhitomir for Canada, via Liverpool, and Halifax, and then by rail to Strathcona, North West. Territories, District of Alberta. At that time Strathcona was not part of Edmonton.

They and their four children, (Pauline born 10/ 2/1877 near Zhitomir, Michael born 22/5/1880 also near Zhitomir, Hulda born 15/12/1884 in Poland and Julius born 20/1/1888 near Zhitomir, moved into a former chicken house on the farm of Ludwig Klapstein, east of Edmonton, and it was here that Martha was born July 13, 1896.

Peter and the eldest daughter worked at anything that they could get. Peter had experience at building, as his family were builders in Germany, Poland, Russia and Rumania for several generations. He became quite skillful at building log buildings.

On Oct. 21, 1895, Peter bought the partial rights to the estate of Donald McLeod. $51.00 for the partially improved homestead N.W. SEC. 6, Tp.51, Range 24, W. 4th. For $15.00 he bought the remains of a log house. By spring of 1896, he had four acres broken and fenced.

By the spring of 1899, he had 18 acres under cultivation, 9 head of cattle, 2 horses, 8 swine, and a 16 x 40 house, an addition to the 16 x 20 that he had completed by Sept., 1896 when they moved into their own first home.

On July 10, 1900, Peter Stockman was declared a bonafide settler, and owner of his homestead. By that time he had 100 acres fenced, and the house had been expanded to 20 x 60 feet.

Peter Stockman became a naturalized citizen of the North West Territories, District of Alberta, on Dec.

19, 1899.
